Phiroz (Dr.) Darukhanavala

Dr. Phiroz (Daru) Darukhanavala is a seasoned professional with a rich and diverse career. He retired as the Vice President and Chief Technology Officer (CTO) for Information Technology and Services at BP. In this key role, he led a dynamic team responsible for swiftly and efficiently aligning external technology innovation with BP’s business needs, employing a venture capital-style approach to rapid adoption. His team played a pivotal role as a catalyst for change within the BP group, applying digital technologies and services to instigate significant business process transformations and cost efficiencies across all business segments. The team’s initiatives were often “game-changing,” consistently delivering annual impacts exceeding $50 million. Additionally, they accelerated the adoption of emerging technologies by organizing executive education and awareness programs, aimed at increasing senior executives’ understanding of the business opportunities created by emerging digital technology trends.

As the VP of IT Integration, Mr. Darukhanavala led critical IT integration programs for the BP-Amoco merger and the Arco acquisition. These programs collectively aimed at achieving over $500 million in annual bottom-line IT cost reductions.

In his previous role as the Director of Global IT Services for the BP Group, he was responsible for establishing standardized IT infrastructure services on a global scale. His extensive career at BP also included serving as the IT Functional Chief for BP Exploration globally, based in London, and as the Chief Information Officer (CIO) for BP Exploration in the Continental U.S. and Alaska.

Before his association with BP, Dr. Darukhanavala served as the Director of the Corporate Supercomputing Center and Head of the Corporate Management Science Group for The Standard Oil Co. Furthermore, he gained experience as a consultant on various projects in both industrial and healthcare sectors. He also shared his knowledge as an adjunct professor of management at several universities in the United States.

Since his retirement, Dr. Darukhanavala has remained active in the field. He has taken on numerous consulting assignments and has been involved on the boards of several companies, ensuring that he stays well-connected and informed about industry and digital advancements.

Dr. Darukhanavala’s academic achievements include holding a Master of Science and Ph.D. in Operations Research from Case Western Reserve University, as well as a Bachelor of Technology in Mechanical Engineering from the Indian Institute of Technology, Bombay. His extensive background and contributions underscore his significant impact on the technology and business landscape.
