Nicholas Donofrio

Nicholas Donofrio is the founder of NMD Group LLC, a strategic consulting firm specializing in projects aimed at advancing healthcare through data and analytics. With a remarkable 44-year tenure at IBM, he played a pivotal role in shaping the company’s technology and innovation strategies until his retirement in October 2008.

During his time at IBM, Mr. Donofrio held various significant positions, including Vice Chairman of the IBM International Foundation and Chairman of the Board of Governors for the IBM Academy of Technology. His responsibilities spanned diverse areas, encompassing IBM Research, Governmental Programs, Technical Support & Quality, Corporate Community Relations, and Environmental Health & Product Safety. Additionally, he oversaw the senior executives responsible for IBM’s enterprise on-demand transformation.

Mr. Donofrio made significant contributions to IBM by leading the development and retention of the company’s technical talent, fostering diversity in culture and thought within the technical community. In recognition of his exceptional contributions, he was honored as an IBM Fellow in 2008, which is IBM’s highest technical distinction.

Nicholas Donofrio’s association with IBM traces back to his early days as a college co-op student in 1964 when he worked on memory technology for the renowned IBM System/360 mainframe computing system. Over the years, he received several honorary doctorates, including those in Engineering from Polytechnic University in 1999, in Sciences from the University of Warwick in England in 2002, in Technology from Marist College in 2005, and in Sciences from the University of Edinburgh in Scotland in 2006. Further, he was awarded honorary doctorates in Sciences from Pace University in 2009 and the National University of Ireland, Maynooth in 2010.

Mr. Donofrio is also a prolific inventor, holding seven technology patents. He is a member of numerous technical and science honor societies, a Fellow of the Institute for Electrical and Electronics Engineers, a Fellow of the UK-based Royal Academy of Engineering, and a member of the US-based National Academy of Engineering. He is also a Fellow of the American Academy of Arts and Sciences.

Nicholas Donofrio is actively involved in corporate governance and serves on various boards, including the Board of Directors for the Bank of New York/Mellon, the Board of Trustees at Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute, the Board of Directors of Liberty Mutual, the Board of Directors of AMD, the Board of Managers of the Delphi Company, and the Board of Trustees of The MITRE Corporation. He is a Senior Fellow of the Kauffman Foundation.

In 2010, he was appointed as a member of the U.S. Secretary of Energy’s Advisory Board (SEAB), further underscoring his commitment to contributing to the advancement of science and technology.
